The Tiger’s opened the Mother’s Day Tournament in Lakewood with a draw against the Blue Sox of Evergreen.

The was the first ever match up between the Tigers and a team from Evergreen as well as a team with Sox in their name.

Once again the Tigers drew first blood, picking up a lone run in the top of the first.  Pitching and defense again struggled out of the gate.  After recording the first out against the first Blue Sox player to take an at bat, the Tigers walked three and added two errors allowing the Sox to take a -1 lead.

As is getting to be a predictable habit – the Tigers buckled down on defense and the second inning was scoreless for both teams.

The third inning saw the defensive woes continue – four errors, two hits and one walk later, the Sox were sitting on a 7-4 lead headed into the fourth.

The fourth inning worsened for the defensively-challenged Tigers – as eight errors were logged along with four solid singles by the Sox.

The Blue Sox played well and completed a 12-5 victory over the Tigers.  They move on to play the Eaton Reds while the Tigers attempt to tackle the BC Bears.

The Wildcats came in at 3-2 in LBL play, the Tigers at 1-3.

Longmont entered the game with cold bats – and quickly warmed them up notching 4 hits, including the first Home Run of the season, to tally 5 runs in the top of the first.

The Wildcats responded, grabbing 2 runs with a single and a triple, to set the score at 5-2 Tigers after one.

The second inning was quick and quiet as both teams went down in order 1-2-3.

The third inning saw the Tigers’ bats again catch fire with four hits.  A single, triple and another Home Run tallied four more runs.  With one run by the Wildcats in the top half – the Tigers now owned a 9-3 lead.

In the fourth, the Tigers added three more, again with good hitting.  No runs for the Wildcats and two more by the Tigers in the fifth put this one out of reach.

The game ended in a 14-3 victory for the Tigers!

Tigers Bite Cobras

Game 2 of the Greeley/Windsor May Daze tournament had the Longmont Tigers squaring off against the Eastern Colorado Cobras.

The Tigers last faced the Cobras, a strong hitting and speedy team, in the USSSA State tournament last year, where the Cobras easily handled the Tigers 21-6.

The Tigers knew this would be a tough battle and this second match up didn’t disappoint, opening with two and a half scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers struck first, collecting two runs to go up 2-0.  The Cobras quickly responded in the top of the fourth with 3 to take the lead, however a run by the Tigers had this one back to even at 4-4 going into the fifth.

Eastern Colorado took their second lead with two outs in the fifth – off of a triple and a single, to score one and go up 4-3, forcing the Tigers to attempt to come from behind again.

In what may have been the gutsiest inning for the Longmont Tigers all season, the Tigers manufactured 2 runs to take the lead.  Following a walk and reaching on an error, a single brought in one run, and then with two outs another hit sent the lead run home.

Longmont took to the mound and closed out the 5-4 victory with 3 sequential outs.

An impressive outing by both teams made for an entertaining and suspenseful game to watch.  Both teams move on into bracket play today in the tournament.  The Cobras meet the Eaton Reds and the Tigers match up with Longmont Baseball League member Berthoud.

Tigers Can’t Stop Stampede

The Longmont Tigers opened up the Greeley/Windsor May Daze tournament against the formidable Fort Collins Stampede on Saturday morning.

The Stampede were one of only two teams with previous USSSA tournament points – they came in with the most at 85.

The Tigers new they had a challenge on their hands – and they stood up to it well, ultimately falling 8-12 to the Fort Collins club in a well-matched, hard fought game by both teams.

The game opened with the Stampede quickly drawing first blood, with a run scored in the top of the first.  The Fort Collins team was quick and assertive on the base paths.  Ready for action, Longmont responded with two runs in the bottom half, showing some base running prowess of their own – and the game was on.

Fort Collins responded notching five runs over the next two innings.  With four runs posted by the Tigers – this game was suddenly all knotted up again at 6-6.  After a scoreless fourth inning, it remained 6-6 going into the 5th inning.

The Stampede broke through first, gathering 6 runs in the top half – and while the Tigers worked hard to respond, they fell just short – generating just 2 more runs.

The Tigers are  really beginning to find themselves as a team – matching up against clubs the caliber of Fort Collins is fantastic for their development.  Hats off to the Stampede for a well-played game.  Great job to the Tigers, and now on to the Cobras!
