To Live The Dream

The Longmont Times Call ran a great story this past Sunday – Still Pushing by Rainer Sabin of the Virginian Pilot – providing an update on Longmont baseball product David Pauley. It covers David and his pitching, and his path from playing baseball in Longmont to where he is now – pitching with the Norfolk Tides. It appears in the Sports section, but it should probably be in Life or Health.
Statistically, it is unlikely that anyone from the Longmont Tigers – or any local team for that matter, will make it to the Major Leagues. I don’t know the stats specifically, but I suspect that is true. Unlikely – but not impossible. It’s even more unlikely when your son struggles with additional physical, medical or health challenges. Except when those challenges make you work harder. This is a thought-provoking read.
As we begin another season of baseball – this article serves as a reminder as to what youth sports is about. Competition and winning – sure. Teamwork – definitely. Developing players skills, talents, and abilities on the field. Providing an opportunity for kids to face and meet challenges on the field, so they are prepared to better deal with life off the field. We put many things in front of our kids, in an attempt to see what sticks, what resonates, what will catch with them.
When they find what they like, and often it is Sports, and baseball, and they are supported – they develop character, strength and heart. Like David Pauley – a great example that, even if it is unlikely any one of our Tigers will make it to the big leagues, it is very likely they will be better equipped for whatever life brings them.
