Tigers Bite Cobras

Game 2 of the Greeley/Windsor May Daze tournament had the Longmont Tigers squaring off against the Eastern Colorado Cobras.

The Tigers last faced the Cobras, a strong hitting and speedy team, in the USSSA State tournament last year, where the Cobras easily handled the Tigers 21-6.

The Tigers knew this would be a tough battle and this second match up didn’t disappoint, opening with two and a half scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers struck first, collecting two runs to go up 2-0.  The Cobras quickly responded in the top of the fourth with 3 to take the lead, however a run by the Tigers had this one back to even at 4-4 going into the fifth.

Eastern Colorado took their second lead with two outs in the fifth – off of a triple and a single, to score one and go up 4-3, forcing the Tigers to attempt to come from behind again.

In what may have been the gutsiest inning for the Longmont Tigers all season, the Tigers manufactured 2 runs to take the lead.  Following a walk and reaching on an error, a single brought in one run, and then with two outs another hit sent the lead run home.

Longmont took to the mound and closed out the 5-4 victory with 3 sequential outs.

An impressive outing by both teams made for an entertaining and suspenseful game to watch.  Both teams move on into bracket play today in the tournament.  The Cobras meet the Eaton Reds and the Tigers match up with Longmont Baseball League member Berthoud.

Wizards Edge Tigers

The Windsor Wizards outlasted the Longmont Tigers on Monday night, handing the Tigers a 8-10 loss.

After jumping out with 2 quick runs in the top of the first, the Tigers failed to get the pitching dialed in, issuing eight walks in the first inning.   Combined with 2 hits and an error in the field and the Tigers quickly fell way behind, 2-9.

Never feeling out of it, the Tigers began the hard battle back, picking up 4 runs in the top of the 2nd inning.  After 2 hits in the 1st inning, the Tigers picked up 3 more to push some runs across and make it  6-9 after two innings.

The teams battled to a draw in the 3rd inning, each scoring a run, taking the score to 7-10.

In the fourth the Tigers managed just one more run, and the rally fell just short, falling 8-100.

There was a lot to be positive about in the losing effort – the hitting came back around, matching the Wizards with 11 each.

Next up, the Boulder Bison out in scenic Boulder, tomorrow night.  Be sure to check our calendar for details, and come out and support the Tigers!

Tigers Snipped by Falcons

The Longmont Tigers tallied their first loss in just their second game of the season to the Longmont Falcons 0-3 on Wednesday night.

This was a pitching and defensive showcase by both teams.  The Tigers and Falcons both turned double plays, had put outs at the plate, and pitched strong, resulting in an exciting, scoreless game through 2 1/2 innings.

The Tigers were the first to crack, in the 3rd inning  – giving up 3 walks.  3 runs then scored on 2 throwing errors in the field.

The Tigers did regroup on pitching and defense, keeping their chances for a comeback alive, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 3 Falcons the rest of the way.

Ultimately the Tigers never found the handle on offense in this one -  and the Falcons never did crack.  With rain pouring in the bottom of the fifth, and time nearly out, the game was called at 0-3 – a win for the Falcons.

The Tigers head into a busy 5-day stretch of games, starting Friday with a 5:30 PM opener versus the Louisville Predators in the King Lyles Memorial Tournament in Denver.   Saturday’s slate has the Tigers facing the Longmont Stealth at 10 AM and the Eaton Reds at 2 PM.

Even more baseball follows that, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday!  So, be sure to check our calendar for details, and come out and support the Tigers!

pic-0357The Tigers matched up this past week with the Berthoud Spartans of the  Longmont Baseball League for a double header.

Entering the game at 4-1 in league play, the Spartans were expected to be a good test for the Tigers.

The first game was well played by both teams, and ended with the Tigers falling just short 12-14.

Falling just short apparently didn’t sit well with the Tigers as they stormed back to take the second game 16-1.  This puts the Tigers at 5-3 in League play and 6-5 overall.

As a first-year team, the Tigers are really beginning to play well together, competing with some of the areas best teams, like the Spartans.

Next up for the Tigers – the Broomfield Slam Tournament.   Be sure to check our Schedule for details.

Tigers Post First Win of 2009

Posted by admin on May 5, 2009 under News | Be the First to Comment

It took three games for the Longmont Tigers to finally broke through and nab their first win on the 2009 season.

The Tigers opened the season last  Wednesday in a match up with the Longmont Wolves.  A very slow start for the Tigers dogged them for 3-innings.  Combined with big hits and good play from the Wolves, the Tigers fell 7-14.

In their second attempt at a victory in 2009, the Tigers took on the Longmont Stealth.  A much better effort was displayed by the Tigers in this one, however the effort still short.  The Tigers were within one or two runs until the late innings when the Stealth also keyed some big hits and pulled away.  Tigers 8, Stealth 15.

Victory could not elude the hard working Tigers forever, and today against the Titans, the Tigers finally put a complete game together.  Aside from a few defensive issues here and there, the boys really hit the ball well, ran the bases smart, and played solid overall. Tigers win 15 – 5 – great to see the boys hard work pay off!

Their effort continues with practice tomorrow, three games and a tournament coming up through the middle of May.

Be sure to check our Calendar – we’d love to see you out at the games!
