The Los Angeles Times ran a great story last week on Carroll Hardy – an interesting former multi-sport professional athlete, of all things, now living in our own Longmont, Colorado!

The story, by Jerry Crowe, puts forth countless interesting facts about Mr. Hardy, the most interesting of all, might be the notoriety of being the only man ever to pinch-hit for Ted Williams.

Other interesting facts:

  • Played Football for the San Francisco 49ers with Y.A. Tittle
  • With the Cleveland Indians he pinch-hit for Roger Maris (and hit a home run!)
  • Pinch-hit three times for the Red Sox’ Carl Yastrzemski
  • Graduated from CU and holds 3 CU sports records

And more… but we don’t want to give it all away here, so you’ll have to read the article yourself.  Enjoy!

Longmont Bidding for Tournament

It was exciting for many local youth baseball fans to hear that Longmont is bidding to become the new host city for the Fort Collins-based Triple Crown Sports.

Triple Crown has held its World Series youth baseball tournament in Steamboat Springs for the past twenty  years and will keep the tournament there through 2010.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today reports that Triple Crown has received seven or eight proposals from other cities to host the tournament.  Longmont is among them, and according to examiner.com, the city is offering incentives – along the lines of paying Triple Crown $200 for every local team and $400 for every out-of-state team it brings to the community.

The tournament would bring thousands of visitors to the host city, and Longmont estimates up to $2 million dollars into the local economy.
